Kenya Women Microfinance Bank (KWFT) for over three decades now has continued to provide opportunities to thousands of families gradually uplifting them out of poverty and elevating them to improved living standards.
KWFT received the license for Deposit Taking Business in March 2010 from Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and it prides itself to being the only Financial Institution in Kenya and Africa that serves a unique niche market, as reflected in the Institution’s slogan ‘Banking on women’ as we are the only Women’s Bank in Africa. With 80% of KWFT’s clients residing in the rural areas, the Institution has made a deliberate effort to reduce inequalities and enhancing financial inclusion by ensuring that its operations reach far and wide to provide equal opportunities to all women and their families around the country. To foster this need KWFT has invested in a vast branch network of 245 offices spread out across 45 out of the 47 counties in Kenya.

While developing products, KWFT has incorporated strategies designed to ensure that our clients businesses grow sustainably, this has been achieved by incorporating key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Triple Bottom Line approach that focuses on the products ability to transform the customers’ lives (people), their impact on the environment (planet) and its ability generate returns (profit). In addition KWFT has also integrated the Kenya’s Government Big Four Agenda which touch the heart of our core business i.e. on food security, affordable housing, manufacturing and affordable healthcare for all.
These approaches are aimed at improving the livelihoods of the clients and their families, uphold their dignity, save them time and energy, earn them income and conserve the environment.
The KWFT branches are designed with a feminine touch to ensure that women are served with dignity. Some of the salient features include mothers’ room (to change and breast feed the baby), wall mirrors and fast lanes (queues) for the elderly and expectant women. KWFT is the leading and the largest MFI that has a great command in the market share, evident in the growing number of clients over the years, currently KWFT serves over 800,000 clients across the country and they are served by over 2800 dedicated employees.
KWFT is a fully fledged Microfinance Bank offering banking services that include both savings and credit products that cater for the needs of Micro, Small and Medium sized entrepreneurs. KWFT’s products and services are open to Organized Groups, Individuals, and Corporates.
As at December 2017, KWFT had a loan book Ksh 19.4 Billion, assets valued at Ksh 28.9 Billion and deposits of Ksh 16.4 Billion.
Investment in Technology
KWFT has invested in technology to enhance its service offering to clients, this includes a state of the art data centre to support the ICT infrastructure and systems to ensure that clients are served efficiently. The Institution has also ensured it’s in line with modern trends in the banking industry; this includes Mobile Banking, ATMS, Agency Banking, Payment Systems (EFT & RTGS) and Money Transfer Services (Mpesa, Airtel Money, Western Union, MoneyGram and PesaLink) which heavily rely on technology.
The agricultural sector continues to play a vital role in Kenya and is the basis upon which lives depend upon. KWFT plays a key role in supporting the smallholder farmers in their agribusiness operations through offering credit facilities and training to boost their economic value and ensure food security both at the household and the society level.
- Lending model
KWFT incorporated group lending where women with no collateral can guarantee each other loans, thus opening avenues for them to access financing.
Before the clients uptake the loans, the clients undergo 8 weeks training on financial literacy; here they learn various business skills such as book keeping/ record keeping and how to save.
The clients then hold monthly meetings with the KWFT officers where they walk the financial journey. This approach has provided financial services at the client’s doorstep to provide convenience and save time and money.
